Teach your Kids how to be safe Online with Gooseberry Planet
Like any mother, Stella James was always worried about her children getting attacked by technology. She used to think that she could protect her kids by ‘setting up the family computer and walking by every so often’ whenever they were using internet. However, with time, they got access to other mediums like WhatsApp, Facebook, BBM, Instagram, Snapchat, texts and occasional emails. And this made her fret even more about their safety and privacy.
As we know, cyberbullying and sexual solicitation has become very common among teenagers. According to The Annual Cyberbullying Survey 2013, 7 out of 10 young people are the victims of cyberbullying and 20% of them are experiencing extreme cyberbullying on a daily basis. Besides, 89% of young people are cyberbullied on Myspace, 54% on Facebook and 24% on Twitter. And the number is only getting worst.
Stella decided to do something more than just tracking online history. She wanted kids and teenagers to recognise the risks involved and to be in a position to make the right choices. She joined forces with Click Labs to create Gooseberry Planet, a game app that is designed for children between 9 and 13 years old to teach them about being safe online. It covers areas like emails, privacy settings, stranger danger, cyber bullying, posting selfie and much more. Throughout the game, the child will navigate through each level finding family members and items, but most importantly, there are real life scenarios that are played out. At each scenario, he or she will have to make decisions and react.
If you are a parent, you will be able to watch and track your child’s progress through the FREE Parallel Gooseberry Parent App. This will also give hints and tips to help start a conversation about internet safety and also be part of their learning journey.
